Silencing of free media often leads to propaganda in support of violence

Many countries face the double threat that comes from silencing of independent journalists and from government-supported propaganda reporting. In addition to relying on censorship, repressive and corrupt regimes use various forms of propaganda to justify violence and to keep themselves in power.

Also extremist groups and unfortunately some journalists themselves continue to practice propaganda journalism in support of violence. Only a few years ago, propaganda broadcasts gave encouragement to the killers of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Rwanda. In many countries propaganda journalism still glorifies repression, terrorism, and ethnic cleansing. more
